  • Washing away the cloth diaper water myth

    April 21, 2014

grovia_washmyth_totaluseOne of the key criticisms of cloth diapers is that they require “large amounts” of water to wash. Sure, most cloth diapers must be washed after every use (although the GroVia Hybrid diaper partially changes that fact!). Assuming “typical” (not water-wise) practices, estimates suggest that laundering diapers could use 15,300 gallons over the course of a 2.5-year diapering period. If you use about the same amount of water as the average American household, washing diapers could account for up to 5% of your total water use.

  • Using Soaker Pads on the Newborn Setting

    March 17, 2014

    image(26)

“If my Shell is on the newborn setting, can I use Soaker Pads?”

This is a question that we see frequently from parents who are new to cloth diapers—and it’s a great one!

An unprepped Soaker Pad looks gigantic; it really does. Once your Soaker Pads, which are made from absorbent natural fibers, are in the prepping process, you’ll watch them shriiiiiiink until, after about 10 washes, they reach their permanent size. This is true for all natural fiber cloth diapers.

  • Cloth Diapering for Newbies

    March 14, 2014

    GroVia-materials

The journey of switching to cloth from disposables can be a bumpy one. First off, it's intimidating to get started...how many to buy, what type to use, how to fasten them, how to wash them, how to store them...the list of questions is never-ending. And then once you do get started, it often takes some testing and tweaking along the way to get your routine just right.

That's why we love hearing from other moms and dads about their firsthand experiences on their quest to use cloth. One of GroVia's amazing partners, Reusit, recently posted a blog article from one of their hard-working moms detailing the scary (and fun) process of staring her own cloth diapering journey. If you are nervous about switching to cloth or are just looking for some newbie tips to help you succeed, this article is for you!

  • ENOUGH with the "Stripping" Already

    February 18, 2014

    wash

Our Customer Service department fields at least 5 "stripping" questions per day. The term, stripping, pops up daily on cloth diaper forums and manufacturer's Facebook walls. I've cloth diapered 5 babies (since 2003) and this term was nonexistent when I started cloth diapering.

As pocket diapers and other polyester cloth diapers became popular, a new generation of washing instructions was marketed alongside these products. Washing instructions that told customers to use 1/2 (or less) of the recommended dose of detergent. The result: unclean diapers, ammonia issues, diaper rashes, and ultimately unusable cloth diapers. This was then followed by a whole host of "stripping" processes and customers who think that this is normal for cloth diapers. It isn't.

  • GroVia Creator in Mamalode Starter Series

    February 10, 2014

    DSC_1540
Starting a new business is scary. And unpredictable. And entails LOTS and LOTS of hard work. No one understands this more than GroVia & The Natural Baby Company Founder Kim Ormsby. That's why it's no surprise that she was chosen by parenting magazine Mamalode to be one of the first showcased in their Starter Series, a new feature that celebrates inspiring entrepreneurs across the country.

The article gives an inside look at the early days of launching these two amazing eco-friendly companies, including the importance of bootstrapping it in the beginning. In fact, The Natural Baby Company operated out of Kim's laundry room when it was first founded in 2003! Although a lot has changed since that time, the motivation behind the businesses have remained the same: "To help unite eco-responsibility and function in homes across the globe by offering a simple way to nurture baby, naturally."

Check out the series for more on how Kim has fulfilled two of her lifelong dreams: building a career doing something she loves and having a big family. Read more >>

  • GroVia & Giving Diapers, Giving Hope team up!

    January 16, 2014

    grovia_gdgh_2014_V3

1 in 3 families, in the United States, struggles to afford diapers for their babies.  Disposable diapers are likely the biggest expense for families and in a house with a child in diapers, disposables make up 50% of household waste.  Giving Diapers, Giving Hope, founded by Kristen McCarthy in 2011, is a non profit created to answer and eliminate these two issues.

GroVia has teamed up with Giving Diapers, Giving Hope to manage the day to day operations, donations, and fulfillment for the foundation.  We are beyond thrilled to help families in the United States with their diapering needs and support this incredible effort. Continue reading

  • GroVia "Ziggy" Fitted Diaper in Washington Post

    December 20, 2013

    kiwipie_fitted_ellie2

Recently we've seen a big uptick in the number of features and stories from mainstream media outlets on the growing trend of cloth diapers. In fact, GroVia's very own Kiwi Pie fitted diaper (in the adorable Ziggy print) was recently included in a cloth diaper article from the Washington Post. The handy guide breaks down how cloth diapers have changed since the days of plastic pants, provides tips for caring for cloth, and gives recommendations for effectively building your stash.

The article also seeks advice from Kelly Wels, author of the book "Changing Diapers." According to Kelly, "Parents who are concerned about the cost, the environmental impact or the chemicals that come with disposables can take heart: Reusable diapers are now a viable option, and there are lots to choose from."

We are thrilled that the word is getting out about the cost, health and environmental benefits of cloth over disposables and are so excited to see our US-made Kiwi Pie line as the featured diaper in this informative article!

sirens_favorite_grovia_250Talk about making us proud! Not only has Major Mahan flown sorties over Afghanistan to protect troops on the ground, but she is a living example of following your dreams. Since she was a little girl, she knew she would fly. And as a Weapons Systems Officer on an F-15 (think Goose in Top Gun!), she got to surprise many of the troops on the ground with a female voice when flying over dangerous territory. And on top of it, she spent her down time meeting and inspiring Afghan women and girls!?! Our hats are off! Continue reading

This is the guy that poured the first GroVia Magic Stick…by hand…in his kitchen!  And the guy that magically keeps track of all of the cloth diapers and baby products, we have in our inventory, plus all the materials that are stored in our various warehouses.  Simply put, if Duane wasn’t here holding it all together for us, we would definitely have “issues”.

  • So, what qualifies as "research" these days anyway? A First-Hand Look at Disposable Diaper Studies

So...I  get an email from my dad recently with a link to an online article entitled "Recycling Myths Revisited".  Not being one to avoid a little controversial banter among my family - especially with holiday visits soon approaching (!) - I felt compelled to read the article.  It pretty much lived up to my expectations, but it also turned out to be a PERFECT case in point of how so-called "research studies" can contribute to the general misleading of consumers on important topics like disposable diapers and environmental impacts. • Return of the Hyena Diaper!!

    November 13, 2013

Some of you may be wondering what the heck a "Hyena Diaper" is!  Well, let me give you a little history lesson.  If you recognize the words; Fussybutt, Honey Boy, Luxe Baby, or Fuzbaby you can skip this paragraph.  For the rest of you, the word Hyena in the cloth diaper world was used to describe us crazy moms who would sit glued to our computers, hitting F5...F5...F5... in hopes of scoring a piece of diaper art.  Yes, I said ART.  Diapers that were meticulously sewn by WAHMs (Work at Home Moms), made of the purest of materials, often hand dyed or appliqued, and packaged and delivered in a glorious box of fluffy goodness.  We Hyenas often crashed websites by our sheer numbers, which eventually led to the creation of Hyena Cart! • Cloth Diapers Making a Comeback

    November 13, 2013

It's happening. Cloth diapers are experiencing a re-surging popularity and the revolution is catching thanks to increasing community resources, enthusiastic cloth diapering families and, more recently, airtime from mainstream news outlets. In fact, America Now News just featured a fantastic segment on cloth diapers that discusses the comeback of cloth diapers and why the new, modern version are becoming increasingly attractive to families everywhere. Much of the information for the segment was provided by Jack Be Natural, one of our favorite GroVia retailers. And we were thrilled to see that they chose to feature GroVia diapers several times throughout the show!

The segment explores the different aspects of diapering that families consider when deciding between cloth and disposables, including the environmental, health, and cost impacts of each option. The feature is chock full of interesting facts and figures, so check it out to learn more about making the right decision for your family!

  • So you’ve heard the GroVia One-Size All-in-One doesn’t work for chubby-legged babies?

    November 2, 2013

I'd like to ask you something.

Do you think the baby on the left is chubby?

    Photo1

Little Betsy is seven months old and closing in on 18 lbs. She’s in the fifth percentile for height… and the 75th for weight. Note the rolls and the chins. You kind of want to bite her, right? There’s no getting around it: my beautiful baby girl is fat. I've never had a baby this fat. I thought this level of roll-age was mythical.

Would it surprise you to hear that Betsy wears GroVia One-Size All-in-Ones every day?

  • GroVia Bamboo Prefolds

    October 21, 2013

GroVia Bamboo Prefolds have quickly become one of our top selling products. Why? They are absorbent, silky soft, and a very inexpensive way to add to your cloth diaper stash!

We are often asked about sizing. Why don't you put a weight range on your prefolds? The answer is this: Weight ranges for prefolds just don't work. They vary too greatly depending on how the prefold is being used, trifolded or fastened. Most people simply trifold their GroVia prefolds in their GroVia Shells, so I've crafted today's post to focus solely on this. Continue reading

  • Huge GroVia Diaper Donation to Colorado Flood Victims.

    September 30, 2013

As a successful company we feel a moral responsibility to help others in need. Each year GroVia is pleased to donate thousands of dollars worth of product both in the United States and abroad.

Helping others is a core belief in our company and whether it is sewing lap blankets for residents of our local nursing home or sending thousands of diapers to flood victims, we are happy to contribute to those in need.

Last week, 3 pallets of GroVia BioDiapers and BioWipes landed in Boulder for the Boulder Disaster Asst. Center. We specifically chose to send our eco-friendly disposable products in this shipment as we knew many had lost their homes and had little to no facilities to wash cloth diapers.

ABC's of Surrogacy - Cloth Diaper 101 Radio ShowHere at GroVia, our ultimate goal is to get the word out about the benefits of cloth diapers. That's why we were excited to see a Cloth Diaper 101 feature on the ABC's of Surrogacy with Dawn Marmorstein. In this episode, Dawn interviews Sandy Soriano Barajas from organic diaper service Luludew. They discuss the benefits that cloth diapers offer, not only in terms of baby products that are green and environmentally friendly, but also cost effective as well.

In the show, they also highlight their top three cloth diaper companies, and we were thrilled to see that GroVia made the list of one of Sandy's favorite brands. There is nothing better than being recommended by a fellow company in the cloth diapering space.

  • Behind the Scenes at a GroVia Photoshoot

    August 29, 2013

We take great pride is showcasing GroVia's product with fantastic lifestyle images.  A day long photo shoot with babies can be comical, exhausting, and even stressful.  Getting that "perfect shot" sometimes means crawling on the floor, holding props in strange positions, or even hanging precariously over the top of an 8 ft ladder!

We've been incredibly fortunate to work with some amazing photographers including, Janie Osborne, Rob Wilke, and Jessica Galligani.  Yesterday's shoot was a lifestyle studio session with Janie.  Mission Impossible:  Get as many cute photos of 10 week old North in a GroVia Newborn AIO.   North was up for the challenge.....or should I say WAS a challenge :-)

The trick with newborns to get them to SLEEP...you know that deep, there could be an earthquake and they wouldn't wake kind of sleep.  From there it is all about position and lighting.  The goal is to have baby look adorable and sweet while also getting a good clear shot of your product, in this case the diaper.  We choose not to do too much styling for these shoots because our amazing product is stylish all on its own!

    August 19, 2013

It's been years since I've watched Dan Akroyd and John Candy go "up to the lake."  But for the past week, I had the chance to reenact some of their antics with family and friends in the beautiful Montana wilderness.  Nothing like a day of beach and sun to make the kids sleep late!  It probably goes without saying that a few of our Hybrid cloth diapers came along for the ride.

  • So Your Baby is "Out-Peeing" Their Newborn AIO...

    July 22, 2013

They are cute and tiny, so how in the world do newborns pee so much?? Looks can be deceiving! Your newborn will nurse 8-12 times per DAY for the first month, and 7-9 times per DAY during the second month. Well, what goes in must go out, which means A LOT of very wet diapers during those first couple of months.

The GroVia Newborn AIO was designed to be a nice trim diapering option for tiny newborns during those all-important newborn weeks. Most people will find that their newborn will start “out-peeing” their NB AIOs before they outgrow them. So what is a mama to do?

North was 6lbs 14oz when born and started wearing his GroVia NB AIOs at 2 days old. At about 3 1/2 weeks of age (and 8lbs), I found that he was starting to leak out of his diaper at about 1 ½ hours. When I would take the diaper off of him, the entire inside was saturated and the excess urine was finding its way out at the leg. So, we started adding some absorbency to his AIOs and VOILA….problem solved! At 5 weeks old and 10lbs he is still happily wearing his GroVia Newborn AIOs, without leaks!! Continue reading

    July 8, 2013

Meet Erica and her children, riding across country by bicycle. Yes, by bike. I had a chance to briefly hear about her and her husband Mark's grand adventure travelling across country by bicycle with their with their 3 children and dog. Erica stopped by The Natural Baby Company retail store in Bozeman heading through from Durango, CO and on to the west coast.

They are posting about their adventure on their blog www.thefamilyride.com, "How far will this journey take us? Where can we go by bike? Or where can’t we go?".  What an inspiration for getting out there and doing something amazing. Good luck Erica and family on your continued adventure.

  • Wise Choice

    June 25, 2013

I recently saw a business article that calculated how much money I would have today if I had the wisdom to buy Apple stock in 1992 rather than my first iPod.  Bummer for me, because the answer is a BIG number!  The good news for GroVia cloth diaper customers is that you are piling up savings from your investment on a constant basis.  At last count, we estimate that our customers (all of you combined) are saving about $250,000 per week by NOT buying disposable diapers.  That's at least $12 million per year.  We hope you are finding fun and productive ways of spending this "cloth diaper dividend"!

  • There is no “I” in team, or GroVia (oh wait, there is….but you get the point)

    May 20, 2013

This is going to sound a bit crazy, but I cringe when people compliment me on the success of the GroVia brand. It isn’t that I don’t appreciate the sentiment behind their comments, because really I do. But, the fact is “I” am not solely responsible for the success of the GroVia cloth diaper brand. What started as a personal vision for something good, has been made truly AMAZING by a team of hard working moms and dads who share a passion for eco-living, parenting, and innovative products. I have to shake my head when I read other company blogs where founders spew their own kudos and preach to their “fans”. The fact is, you simply cannot build a company and attain any measure of success by yourself. It’s not a one-woman (or one-man) show! Success together is so much sweeter than alone. We value creativity and uniqueness above “pats on the back” and it shows in our crazy cool products! Continue reading
