  • 5 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Cloth Diaper

    May 22, 2014

"I'm taking these Huggies and uh whatever cash you got." -Nicholas Cage, Raising Arizona "I'm taking these Huggies and uh whatever cash you got." -Nicholas Cage, Raising Arizona

    1) You have a surplus of money.  That’s right, you’re rolling in the dough and see no benefit in
    saving $2000 per child.

    2) You love paper and plastic underwear.  Why wouldn’t your baby?

    3) Your significant other enjoys taking out the trash.  Daily trips to the curb may be the only
excerise you get as a new parent.

    4)  Someone in your family works for Proctor and Gamble. 'Nuff said.

    5)  You live for your weekly trip to the big box store.  Add a toddler for extra fun!

    What’s your #6?

  • Alphabet Soup: good for kids AND the Earth

    April 30, 2014

July 2014 UPDATE: GroVia's parent company, The Natural Baby Company, became a certified B Corporation this month. Thanks to all of our customers for helping to change the world!

    A_BCorp_logo_POS

Just about everyone's heard of an LLC before...and then there is the good old S-Corp, and the C-Corp...and before you know it, the alphabet soup of American corporations can get pretty overwhelming...and frankly pretty annoying.

But there is some good news that is just coming over the horizon. It's something called a B Corporation. And in this case, rather than referring to something in the IRS tax code, B stands for "benefit". What's that you say? Benefit and Corporation in the same phrase?!? Yes...as it turns out, leaders in the business world - and I mean thought leaders, not necessarily profit leaders(!) - are waking up to realize that their companies don't operate in a vacuum. Their products generally have some impact on the ENVIRONMENT, they all rely on PEOPLE for their markets and workers, and they all impact their local COMMUNITIES in one way or another. • Using Soaker Pads on the Newborn Setting

    March 17, 2014

    image(26)

“If my Shell is on the newborn setting, can I use Soaker Pads?”

This is a question that we see frequently from parents who are new to cloth diapers—and it’s a great one!

An unprepped Soaker Pad looks gigantic; it really does. Once your Soaker Pads, which are made from absorbent natural fibers, are in the prepping process, you’ll watch them shriiiiiiink until, after about 10 washes, they reach their permanent size. This is true for all natural fiber cloth diapers.

  • Cloth Diapering for Newbies

    March 14, 2014

    GroVia-materials

The journey of switching to cloth from disposables can be a bumpy one. First off, it's intimidating to get started...how many to buy, what type to use, how to fasten them, how to wash them, how to store them...the list of questions is never-ending. And then once you do get started, it often takes some testing and tweaking along the way to get your routine just right.

That's why we love hearing from other moms and dads about their firsthand experiences on their quest to use cloth. One of GroVia's amazing partners, Reusit, recently posted a blog article from one of their hard-working moms detailing the scary (and fun) process of staring her own cloth diapering journey. If you are nervous about switching to cloth or are just looking for some newbie tips to help you succeed, this article is for you!

  • GroVia Creator in Mamalode Starter Series

    February 10, 2014

    DSC_1540
Starting a new business is scary. And unpredictable. And entails LOTS and LOTS of hard work. No one understands this more than GroVia & The Natural Baby Company Founder Kim Ormsby. That's why it's no surprise that she was chosen by parenting magazine Mamalode to be one of the first showcased in their Starter Series, a new feature that celebrates inspiring entrepreneurs across the country.

The article gives an inside look at the early days of launching these two amazing eco-friendly companies, including the importance of bootstrapping it in the beginning. In fact, The Natural Baby Company operated out of Kim's laundry room when it was first founded in 2003! Although a lot has changed since that time, the motivation behind the businesses have remained the same: "To help unite eco-responsibility and function in homes across the globe by offering a simple way to nurture baby, naturally."

Check out the series for more on how Kim has fulfilled two of her lifelong dreams: building a career doing something she loves and having a big family. Read more >>

  • GroVia & Giving Diapers, Giving Hope team up!

    January 16, 2014

    grovia_gdgh_2014_V3

1 in 3 families, in the United States, struggles to afford diapers for their babies.  Disposable diapers are likely the biggest expense for families and in a house with a child in diapers, disposables make up 50% of household waste.  Giving Diapers, Giving Hope, founded by Kristen McCarthy in 2011, is a non profit created to answer and eliminate these two issues.

GroVia has teamed up with Giving Diapers, Giving Hope to manage the day to day operations, donations, and fulfillment for the foundation.  We are beyond thrilled to help families in the United States with their diapering needs and support this incredible effort. Continue reading

  • GroVia "Ziggy" Fitted Diaper in Washington Post

    December 20, 2013

    kiwipie_fitted_ellie2

Recently we've seen a big uptick in the number of features and stories from mainstream media outlets on the growing trend of cloth diapers. In fact, GroVia's very own Kiwi Pie fitted diaper (in the adorable Ziggy print) was recently included in a cloth diaper article from the Washington Post. The handy guide breaks down how cloth diapers have changed since the days of plastic pants, provides tips for caring for cloth, and gives recommendations for effectively building your stash.

The article also seeks advice from Kelly Wels, author of the book "Changing Diapers." According to Kelly, "Parents who are concerned about the cost, the environmental impact or the chemicals that come with disposables can take heart: Reusable diapers are now a viable option, and there are lots to choose from."

We are thrilled that the word is getting out about the cost, health and environmental benefits of cloth over disposables and are so excited to see our US-made Kiwi Pie line as the featured diaper in this informative article!

  • We Just Got Inc.'d!

    August 23, 2011

WE ARE PROUD TO ANNOUNCE: The Natural Baby Company has been awarded a place on the 2011 Inc. 500|5000 list, Inc.’s annual ranking of the fastest-growing private companies in America! The list debuted in 1981 as a ranking of the 100 fastest-growing private companies in the U.S. The following year, it expanded to the Inc. 500 and, in 2007, they inaugurated the Inc. 5000. Through each evolution, Inc. has sought to recognize and to celebrate the creativity, dedication, and hard work that entrepreneurs put into building their companies.

The Natural Baby Company debuted this morning at number 457 on Inc.’s list – proving what we’ve all known for so long, that cloth diapers and natural parenting products are not only making a huge impact on our environment and the health of our children, but these products encompass an influential part of the U.S. economy as well.

On behalf of our entire team, we want to send big THANK YOUs! to all of our retailers, customers, friends, family and anyone who has ever had a hand in supporting our business. We are so grateful for all your support along the way. Here’s to making our industry bigger, better, and to changing the world – one responsible product at a time.

Many thanks and lots of love,

Kim Ormsby and The Natural Baby Company

  • GroVia AIO One-Size Cloth Diaper Wins MACT Excellence Award

    December 30, 2010

MACT Award"GroVia™ All-In-One is currently our favorite All-In-One (AIO) One-Size cloth diaper. We have tried many different AIO’s and GroVia’s AIO is outperforming in design and convenience. This diaper is not only Mom Approved, but also Dad, Babysitter and Grandma approved!

My husband wasn’t overly excited about going cloth, but he converted willingly after he tried GroVia’s AIO only once. He’s usually picking GroVia’s AIO’s from the stack of cloth diapers, whenever he has to change our son. My mom was quite impressed with these as well, the last cloth diaper she saw was in the seventies and it was like going from B&W TV to 3D – a revolution! Our babysitter never tried AIO’s as well, so she was a bit hesitant at first, but now she’s actually telling all the other moms about ‘the perfect’ diaper."

  • The Montana Pioneer Interviews GroVia founder, Kim Ormsby

    July 14, 2010

Montana's Small Business Person of the Year
Natural Baby Entrepreneur Tells Us How She Did It

    BY PAT HILL

Kim Ormsby of Bozeman transformed a desire to take better care of her babies' backsides into a multi-million dollar business, one that has made her Montana's 2010 Small Business Person of the Year.

The award, given by the U.S. government's Small Business Administration, had Ormsby in Washington, D.C., the last week of May being honored for her unique brand of GroVia diapers and other baby care products. She calls her business The Natural Baby Company, selling her products from a Bozeman storefront and via the Internet—and business is booming.

“The award was certainly a surprise…” Ormsby told the Pioneer the day after she returned from her D.C. trip, “…nothing we had planned on. It's very nice to be recognized for our work, and we're thrilled.”

Ormsby's success is one of those stories that small business dreams are made of. But her path has had some unexpected twists along the way. Ormsby graduated from college in Jamestown, North Dakota, with a bachelors degree in biology. She was living in Denver, Colorado, with her name on a waiting list for attendance at Colorado State University's veterinarian school, when she had her first baby in 2000. She instead took a job with the telecommunications company Qwest, headquartered in Denver, and moved to Bozeman in 2001 to work for Qwest here. But when the telecommunications bubble burst that same year, tech stocks tumbled, and so did Ormsby's job with Qwest. She found herself unemployed, but still keeping busy as a mother, and diapers had already made their entrance into Ormsby's life. Continue reading

  • Women Entrepreneur "The Right Way to Rebrand"

    July 9, 2010

You can't just flip a switch. The Natural Baby Company discovered firsthand that rebranding is an intensive process.

When we launched Gro Baby, our modern cloth diaper line in April 2009, we had no idea how much it would transform our business model. We started The Natural Baby Company in 2005 with three product lines--WonderWraps, Pocket Change and DreamEze. Now our successful little company, with a mere 50-plus retailers, was about to experience a boom in business.

Within months of the Gro Baby launch, we had wholesale distributors on three continents and were supplying 500-plus retailers worldwide. It was abundantly clear that the Gro Baby brand name would outsell our other products, and it was starting to define our company. Customers and retailers no longer knew us by our company name, The Natural Baby Company. They knew us as Gro Baby.

In early January 2010, our team sat down and started strategizing. We asked ourselves some very simple questions: Who are we? Who are our customers? Where is our company going? Over the course of a few weeks, we took the time to brainstorm ideas, names and mission statements. We eventually decided to pick a single brand name that all of our products would be sold under. The name chosen was GroVia. Our brand mission: Simplifying the way parents nurture baby, naturally. The amount of work that goes into a rebrand is substantial, to say the least. Timing is so important, and scheduling and meeting deadlines are mind-boggling. Continue reading

Impending parenthood is a nerve-racking time. Decisions—big ones, little ones, life-changing ones
and even relatively insignificant ones (like what color to paint the nursery)—fill up your days and nights. Not sure where to start? Well, forget pink or blue—green is the way to go when it comes to getting ready for your little one. If you start from green, you can rest assured that your choices will be sound ones, which is why we asked Sue Brown and the staff of Satara Baby for some advice on her favorite organic baby gear options on the market today.

Sue, who's been in the green game for eight years, having bought her first brick-and-mortar (then called Home Environment) in Madison, Wis., in 2002 with her partner Tyrone Bell, and her staff are on a mission to educate all people on the benefits of eco-friendly products and empower them to make the right choices for themselves and the planet.

  • Boutique Café GroVia Review and Giveaway

    June 6, 2010

GroVia, by The Natural Baby Company, is the rebrand GroBaby and makes everything you need to go completely green when it comes to cloth diapers. I’ve been testing their Hybrid Shell and Soaker set (as well as their Cloth AIO, more to come later), and I love it. This diaper is truly different from everything else on the market. It’s beautifully made and has awesome design. A lot of thought went into this diaper and I definitely appreciate that! Plus, the cotton is buttery soft, organic, and impressively absorbent. I love that the soaker snaps out and is easily replaced with a new, fresh soaker. Or if you’re cloth diapering on the go, there’s also innovative BioSoakers, which stick right into your GroVia shell and can be composted, flushed or just plain thrown-out. I’ve rarely had to wash my shell due to the gathered edges and absorbency of the soaker and less laundry is also a plus. Although the initial price tag may seem a bit on the higher end of cloth diapering, remember that you can use one shell with at least 2 soakers (in my case 3+, but this all depends on your baby), which quickly brings down the cost of cloth diapering to the lower end. Score. The soaker does take longer to dry than some other cloth diapers, but as I’ve mentioned before, this just proves to me that the soaker will soak up a ton!
