Behind The Scenes
As questions about the history of our brand arise in the GroVia Families Facebook Group, I’ve noticed something: I don’t share the story of just how our company and brand came to be very often.
I often reflect on just how far we’ve come since the earliest days of our company, but the whole narrative is not something I generally share. It’s not because I’m not proud of it, it’s just that I am someone who is always looking forward. The excitement of the future is what drives me and our whole team. Our early years laid a foundation that was so strong and unyielding that it’s easy to forget just how important those formative years really were. I lost my corporate job after 9/11, when the recession started, and stayed home with our daughter for the first several months. Then we discovered we were expecting our second baby! I started researching cloth diapers for our new baby since our first baby had had frequent rash issues in disposables. This led me to concept an online store business that would focus on natural parenting products like cloth diapers, slings, and wood toys. Continue reading
When did you first realize that this GroVia thing "was real" and was going to take off as a business? What was going through your mind at the time?
When we relocated from being a home-based business to our first store/warehouse location almost 7 years ago. My mind was still in tact, though local customer feed-back and the amount of goods we were bringing in to the store made it clear that things were progressing forward , but still in a timely way. What I mean is, we didn't get big-headed or let things get away from us that we couldn't make clear decisions on what was best for our family and our customers.
If you haven't seen it already, here is a short instructional video about some of the innovative features and benefits of the GroVia Hybrid Diaper. Happy viewing!

The Founding Fathers would thank you...and so do we!
Every week that goes by, GroVia cloth diaper users keep about 1 MILLION disposable diapers from going to landfills. That's a lot of diapers, and they add up fast. Since we launched our first GroVia Hybrid cloth diaper back in 2009, you have all combined to keep over 257 million disposable diapers from piling up in our environment. That's the equivalent of twelve Mount Rushmores...and counting. THANK YOU!!!
Key assumptions used for the above calculations: 2 washes per week per diaper, 2.5 years until potty training, 21.92 used disposable diapers per cubic foot of trash, approximately 927,000 cubic feet in Mount Rushmore (we called park rangers to ask!)
It's enough to make a dad proud when his son reports that his teacher had him read his "persuasive essay" aloud in class because it was so good. It's a whole new level of pride when you read it and see the topic that he chose without prompting from anyone! I don't know about you, but I don't remember writing this kind of essay in 2nd grade...maybe it has something to do with this Common Core thing that seems to have everyone talking. Or maybe the next generation is just tuned in to things that need some changing. Either way, happy reading...and I hope your children are seeing the world through a similar lens! July 2014 UPDATE: GroVia's parent company, The Natural Baby Company, became a certified B Corporation this month. Thanks to all of our customers for helping to change the world!
Just about everyone's heard of an LLC before...and then there is the good old S-Corp, and the C-Corp...and before you know it, the alphabet soup of American corporations can get pretty overwhelming...and frankly pretty annoying.
But there is some good news that is just coming over the horizon. It's something called a Certified B Corporation. And in this case, rather than referring to something in the IRS tax code, B stands for "benefit". What's that you say? Benefit and Corporation in the same phrase?!? Yes...as it turns out, leaders in the business world - and I mean thought leaders, not necessarily profit leaders(!) - are waking up to realize that their companies don't operate in a vacuum. Their products generally have some impact on the ENVIRONMENT, they all rely on PEOPLE for their markets and workers, and they all impact their local COMMUNITIES in one way or another. We take great pride is showcasing GroVia's product with fantastic lifestyle images. A day long photo shoot with babies can be comical, exhausting, and even stressful. Getting that "perfect shot" sometimes means crawling on the floor, holding props in strange positions, or even hanging precariously over the top of an 8 ft ladder!
We've been incredibly fortunate to work with some amazing photographers including, Janie Osborne, Rob Wilke, and Jessica Galligani. Yesterday's shoot was a lifestyle studio session with Janie. Mission Impossible: Get as many cute photos of 10 week old North in a GroVia Newborn AIO. North was up for the challenge.....or should I say WAS a challenge :-)
The trick with newborns to get them to SLEEP...you know that deep, there could be an earthquake and they wouldn't wake kind of sleep. From there it is all about position and lighting. The goal is to have baby look adorable and sweet while also getting a good clear shot of your product, in this case the diaper. We choose not to do too much styling for these shoots because our amazing product is stylish all on its own!
They are cute and tiny, so how in the world do newborns pee so much?? Looks can be deceiving! Your newborn will nurse 8-12 times per DAY for the first month, and 7-9 times per DAY during the second month. Well, what goes in must go out, which means A LOT of very wet diapers during those first couple of months.
The GroVia Newborn AIO was designed to be a nice trim diapering option for tiny newborns during those all-important newborn weeks. Most people will find that their newborn will start “out-peeing” their NB AIOs before they outgrow them. So what is a mama to do?
North was 6lbs 14oz when born and started wearing his GroVia NB AIOs at 2 days old. At about 3 1/2 weeks of age (and 8lbs), I found that he was starting to leak out of his diaper at about 1 ½ hours. When I would take the diaper off of him, the entire inside was saturated and the excess urine was finding its way out at the leg. So, we started adding some absorbency to his AIOs and VOILA….problem solved! At 5 weeks old and 10lbs he is still happily wearing his GroVia Newborn AIOs, without leaks!! Continue reading
This is going to sound a bit crazy, but I cringe when people compliment me on the success of the GroVia brand. It isn’t that I don’t appreciate the sentiment behind their comments, because really I do. But, the fact is “I” am not solely responsible for the success of the GroVia cloth diaper brand. What started as a personal vision for something good, has been made truly AMAZING by a team of hard working moms and dads who share a passion for eco-living, parenting, and innovative products. I have to shake my head when I read other company blogs where founders spew their own kudos and preach to their “fans”. The fact is, you simply cannot build a company and attain any measure of success by yourself. It’s not a one-woman (or one-man) show! Success together is so much sweeter than alone. We value creativity and uniqueness above “pats on the back” and it shows in our crazy cool products! Continue reading
